UT2K3

I don't have a lot of information on UT2K3 because other people are following it and I haven't had time to do it myself, but the following information is from a LOG that was sent to me today.  I thought some of you would be interested in it. It is a variety of Q and A with Mark Rein from Epic it is dated July 30th.

<Munkey> See, I want to intercept a 30 yard pass, thats what I dream about at night.

<MarkRein[Epic]> Munkey--> Intercepting passes would be pretty tough (because the levels are so large) but possible. 
<MarkRein[Epic]> Munkey--> i was hoping we could some small arenas that really feel like a hockey rink or a football field. I suspect we'll see those emerge once the games ships. There are some clans in Europe who wanted to do team uniforms and real "fields" which would be awesome!

<MarkRein[Epic]> Munkey--> you can pass as far as you can translocate. Plus you can just toss the ball to the ground or bounce it off terrain/structures and then someone can come along and pick it up by running over it. If the ball is idle for too long then it goes back to the starting point by itself

<MarkRein[Epic]> hustler--> Announcer is being redone but I'm not sure if the CPL was the new announcer or old. There are a lot of little niggly bugs with the announcer right now where he says two things on top of each other or too close together - these are the kind of things we're still fixing

<cryton> Mark-->how are the maps progressing. Are you finding there are lots of subtle changes that are having 
to be made because of the testers, or did your mappers get it mostly right first time round?

<MarkRein[Epic]> Cryton--> there are tons of small changes being made to the maps but that's normal when you 
get this far along. Some maps are being outright overhauled but just handful.

<MarkRein[Epic]> which means that weapon priority is broken so you run by sniper rifle and even though
<MarkRein[Epic]> you've set it to a low priority it gets picked up and you switch to it -- ANNOYING!
<MarkRein[Epic]> There seem to be a lot of little burbs and pauses when new things appear on the screen
<MarkRein[Epic]> The minigun alt-fire is still useless and needs to be made stronger
<MarkRein[Epic]> You still don't get enough ammo for the default weapon
<MarkRein[Epic]> None of the detail settings work (menu related) right now
<MarkRein[Epic]> so you turn player shadows off and they're still on (argh!)
<MarkRein[Epic]> The alt-fire on the link gun is laggy in low-gravity levels
<MarkRein[Epic]> We NEED hud-damage indicators, I still can't tell where I'm getting hit from
<MarkRein[Epic]> In one of the BR maps both goals appear to be red when one should be blue and one should be red (they still work but colors are messed up)

<monkeybone> mark-> one of the things great and unique about ut was its menu system. It also had a lot of flexibility. Will the new menu system(which resembles the meny system of most games) be as flexible and powerful as the old one? Can we have an option of an old UT style menu? Also another unrelated question is will the shock rifle have the push from the primary fire?

<MarkRein[Epic]> Monkeybone--> There are two menu components: 1. the game menu, 2. Uwindows - Uwindows won't ship with the game but will ship afterward. We're working hard to make both Mod-friendly

<[DUK]eXoR> What changes have been made to the mutator system ? When creating mutators for UT I often found that there were very much thing I couldn't do because it would be break compatibility with other mutators (like having your own pawn classes, for example). Has this been changed ?

<Rhakka|uu> I hvae one for you mark: I don't know if you are aware, but there is a controversy as some clans use outside means of timing powerups in matches, which is legal, but under fire. Will 2003 either have a good on the HUD timer, or perhaps could it announce 10 seconds prior to respawn that a Powerup or Megaweapon is about to spawn so all players are on a level playing field, and this issue can die?

<MarkRein[Epic]> Phenom--> It will be cooler stat logging than UT had but that's all I can say right now.

<MarkRein[Epic]> Raptor--> it's a barebones IRC client like UT had

<fazz> Mr.Rein - i dont know if u are going to anwser here.. but ill try.. im a "pro-gamer" in quake3 in europe.. and i tried the game in paris @ lan-arena7.. and many quakers are thinking of going over to ut2k3.. but one thing that is bugging me and many others.. is that its very hard to see the skins on far distance.. in q3 there are "pm skins" almost like fullbrights.. i wonder if there are going to be such things for ut2k3 aswell -

<MarkRein[Epic]> Fazz--> yeah I definitely think the characters come out a little dark right now. I think it is something that will be addressed or perhaps there will be an option for the shoulder lights.

<MarkRein[Epic]> TNSe--> That doesn't sound like a very useful strategy - Adrenaline doesn't last that long and it takes a while to build it back up. For those who played builds at press events you should know Adrenaline collection has been scaled back considerably. It takes longer to get it now.

<MarkRein[Epic]> TNSe--> I think the goal was to reduce spam but not castrate the game. Loading rockets is fun but not without peril. How many of us have died while loading up rockets? I know it happens to me all the time and it's part of the game.

<Cache-afk> In q3 players really dumb down the graphics to get the most FPS. How much tweaking of configs is allowed in UT2003 compared to q3.

<MarkRein[Epic]> Cache--> You can't dumb down our graphics very much. You can do things like turn town texture detail or turn off player shadows but that's about it. Render modes can't be modified for net play.

Wow, good work on the transcript! That must have taken a LOT of patience. I'm sure everyone here thanks you for your efforts!  Ok, there are a couple of errors. The following answers do not line up properly with the questions or need clarification:


<NYGrrrl> are voice packs implemented the same as in UT, are there voices for each race and did they really play like girls?

-- I forgot to add that Shane Caudle and I will be going to QuakeCon this year. The Machinima Film Festival, which runs concurrent to QuakeCon and is organized by John Carmack's wife Anna Kang, has invited us to come and demo Matinee (or in-game cinematic tool that's perfect for Machinima) and show and example or two of our work in that area. We're also going to provide some prizes for the festival. While we're there we plan to stop by QuakeCon to say "hi" and see how the pros do it. I have a lot of respect for QuakeCon. We've done yearly (and sometime bi-yearly) licensee user group meetings and a very small mod-maker event. We've thought about doing something for end-users and mod-makers on a bigger scale than those and our publisher (Infogrames) has expressed interest in it so I'm looking forward to checking out Quakecon to see how the pros do it.

-- You missed the one where I mentioned that Right Hemisphere is creating an awesome custom skin painting program for us to include with UT2003 that lets you paint right on the models in 3D!
